What a Recruiter Sees in an Attorney Resume
Your first evaluation by a potential employer is made upon your cover letter and resume. If your resume lacks care and effort, an employer would probably anticipate your service to be of the same category. So, you cannot afford a sloppy resume.

To apply for a job in a law firm, it is essential to avoid surprise or shock tactics and confine your resume to standard paper, true type fonts, and conventional formatting. The resume must have 100% accurate proofreading to survive the first round on the recruiter's table and keep from being rejected before the recruiter has a chance to notice your work experience, or skills and qualifications, in detail.

Remember that in an employees' market, recruiters primarily want to get the best people in, and that is how they screen the few resumes they have in hand. However, in an employers' market, as it is under the recession, every recruiter has the mindset of screening resumes primarily to keep the worst out and only then read through what is left, for they need to sort through piles of resumes. If your resume manages to stay on the table after the seemingly worst is tossed out, it is only then that the recruiter will truly go through your resume.

So, what are the factors that influence the hiring process from the angle of a recruiter? While the recruitment of employees with the desired skill sets is the obvious objective, it also remains that any good employer knows how to bring the skill sets of the right candidate quickly up to desired levels. And this can be done after the candidate has been hired.

What is important about the hiring process in law firms is that it seeks candidates with matching basic skill sets and work experience as a granted condition, but focuses more on finding the right candidate with a receptive and alert mindset. A candidate who can be foreseen as an asset for the company. The most important pressure working on recruiters throughout the hiring process is not that of making the correct choice, but that of avoiding the wrong choice. This is the reason why attorney resumes follow established formats and refrain from visible excesses. Law firms look for the mindsets of attorneys in attorney resumes, and detest the kind that looks tailor made for advertisement agencies.

A common mistake made in attorney resumes is confusing work-experience with skill, or expect that the recruiter will naturally infer one's skill set by reading through the list of qualifications and work-experience. Though recruiters in their line of work do make such inferences, clearly setting out skill sets in a resume increases your chances of recruitment.

Mention of skill sets that fit the needs of the job applied for and relevant skills that support productive output in relation to work experience make a resume more acceptable. This point is often overlooked while preparing attorney resumes and even though some resumes do have a heading of “relevant skill sets” they are usually a listing of generalized skills and not paragraphs linking the skill sets to productivity in present or past jobs. One of the principal reasons behind this imbalance in resume content occurs due to the enormous importance given by law firms on the reputation of past employers and periods of service with them. Candidates are keener to iterate work-experience with past employers than to show how their skill sets kept them productive and will continue to serve future employers in good stead.
