The Ultra-short and Multi-page Creative Attorney Resume
Resumes following the basic structure of a petition are rare, but not unheard of, in the legal world, and they add a whiff of freshness to an otherwise stereotyped document. True to petition structure, the minimum and most focused information can be covered in the initial two pages while the rest of the detailed information added in as addenda or annexure.

Following the convention of presenting detailed material through annexure is in line with the structure of legal documents and rarely raises any eyebrows except in appreciation. So, if you think you need to change the looks and presentation of your resume, this might be a healthy and creative option carrying less risk than presentations that seem too unconventional in a conservative environment.

How to do it

The best method is to present your cover letter as the front page, which incidentally should also include your contact details, as well as your profile. This should be in the nature of a short half page application that gives the list of documents attached with the application including your resume and other annexure.

Include your resume on the next page and let it be a short paragraphed resume with appropriate headings, and with each section supported by one or two sentences mentioning related strengths or achievements in short and showing in which annexure the rest of the details are to be found. Following this method will help you to create an ultra-short single page resume that focuses on your best points while you can leave necessary but tedious or unsavory details in the annexure.

Follow the convention of typing in the courts and follow the line spacing, paragraph spacing, and fonts used in court documents. Remember, that law firm employees have become habituated to certain paragraph formats that are easy on their eyes and diverging from that can create loss of comfort to a law firm employee inspecting your resume. This article does not provide the typesetting format to be followed, for traditions sometimes vary from region to region and it is good to follow the convention of the principal bar of the locality where the employer is situated. Normally, double spacing for lines, and true type fonts are safe.

Attorney resumes rarely bear any other color but black and white, and it is safe to keep things that way. Use legal paper to provide the resume an authentic look rather than using the standard A 4 or letter-size unless the employer specifies otherwise. It may seem expensive to use court dummy paper, but an application for a job to an employer in the legal fraternity is an important task that justifies a little expense.

Properly staple the entire document and put it inside a plastic folder or other transparent covering before you submit, the way you would do it before handing over relevant papers to any client.

What not to do

While adopting the structure of a legal document to prepare an attorney resume may be appreciable, carrying the doctrine too far to use heavy legalese is not. Using legalese like ''inasmuch as'' and ''notwithstanding'' etc., are not cool, even on an attorney resume, for ultimately the document is a job application and not a court document.
