Legal Resumes That Do Their Job
To create an effective resume for your legal career, you need to be aware of recruitment trends and the needs of employers. While formal resume writing and presentation has formed its own grammar and become stereotyped to a large extent, the only way to break free and turn your resume into a true weapon is reflect employer needs.

Ultimately, the job of a resume is to convince a potential employer that you represent a fair bargain and score positive on a cost-benefit analysis in the long or short run. Starting your resume with your law school and grades may be the proper thing to do, but if you have a portable business portfolio, stating that first may not look proper, but is surely prudent. That is, if you want to grab the attention of the employer and let the resume do its job.

In the current market, the order of importance of headings in your resume should follow a pattern like:
  1. Portable business
  2. Work experience
  3. Association with relevant social networks and your roles and activities in them (not online networks, unless it is a professional group)
  4. Student work experience (like doing reviews etcetera)
  5. Specialized qualifications (like PhD in Chemistry)
  6. Law School qualifications
  7. Academic achievements
  8. Extra-curricular achievements
Now, this order might seem illogical and totally opposed to the formal grammar of resume writing, but this is the one that is going to do its work. There is sufficient logic behind the offered structure and it is created according to current needs of the market.

Under the recession, and as long as the recession lasts, portable business will continue to be the most important criterion for employers and recruiters. It will still retain its importance once the recession is over, but the need for it is acute now, as far as law firms are concerned. So, a healthy portable business portfolio will immediately grab the attention of an employer and result in an interview call.

Okay, so what to do if you are just fresh out of law school and have a portable business that is not worth mentioning? You still mention it first, unless it is nonexistent. There is no shame in stating that you have a portable business of only $ 5000 and not $ 500, 000. To the employer it proves the right mindset, and shows that you place importance upon building business and carrying your own weight. That matters more than anything else to a professional law firm.

Now, there is no need to stress the obvious importance of work-experience, which would definitely come first if you lack a portable business. However, current association with relevant social networks and roles in them is a point which many candidates miss out on their resumes, despite being socially active. This point is of greatest importance, for once again, it demonstrates the mindset of building business and staying up to date. A candidate active in social networks has a greater chance to bring in new business to the firm, while a candidate who fails to mention such activities will be seen as a risk. A candidate without visible evidence of being socially active will be seen as a possible burden whose contribution to the firm will rest entirely on being able to serve business generated by the firm’s own channels. Under such a condition, all qualifications and achievements of the candidate would come under closer scrutiny for the initial role visualized for such a candidate is that of a helping hand and not that of a potential partner. However, a candidate who clearly demonstrates on his or her resume, active participation in relevant social networks will always be visualized as a potential partner.

That said, the need for emphasizing the importance of the other headings in a legal resume is unnecessary, for it is self-evident. If you have been sending out resumes with a formal pattern, try this one for a change, and it has the highest possibility of working under current market conditions.
