The Philosophy behind an Effective Resume
Simply matching your resume with an advertised job description is essential, but insufficient. Most job applicants already have a resume of some sort. However, many such resumes need polish and focus to be effective. It is also quite common to find people neglecting to update their resumes or periodically improve them.

Usually people spend a lot of effort, and some money, to create a resume that meets their present needs well. However, though the needs of candidates, employers, and job market trends continue to vary, candidates keep sending the same resume over and over again for different jobs, to different employers, and at different times. This is evidently illogical.

To be effective and fulfill its purpose, a resume needs to be tweaked according to the situation each time before it is sent out. A resume is half of the interview, and it needs to align itself and emphasize those strengths that will be most valued by a potential employer. Since company culture and employer needs can vary, a resume also needs to vary from case to case in order to be successful.

The first thing you need to do for properly focusing your resume is find out as much as possible about:
  • Your potential employer
  • Your potential immediate job role, and associated duties
  • The next job role where an employee would naturally be promoted from the job role you are applying for, and associated responsibilities
One of the best ways to find information on company policies, philosophy, and outlook is to get hold of the company's annual reports for three years. Read the statements made by the CEO carefully, it will tell you most of what you need to know.

Whether you are facing an interview, or creating a resume, you need to put yourself in the shoes of a potential employer and view yourself as a candidate. Every employer suffers with wrong employees, and has to take a risk on any new recruitment. Few employees can join work in a new environment and straight away begin to give their best from day one. There is a period of time, which the employee needs to settle into the new job, find out about and fit into the workflows, and get trained, as well as updated, to be able to give their best.

For the employer, this period is a time of investment, and wasteful if the employee is unfit for the job, or ups and leaves the office after the easy period is over. With each new recruitment, the employer will suffer temporary loss of productivity vis-à-vis the new employee. The employer will also spend resources to train the employee and accommodate him or her. If the employee doesn't stick through to justify the investment upon him or her, then the employer suffers a loss.
So, the big question before the employer is not really how good you are at present, but how likely that you will stay with him long enough to justify his investment upon you. Skill sets can be acquired or improved and though they are important to decide whether you are at all suitable for the job or not, the level of your skills may not be as much important to an employer to take the decision for recruitment. What needs to be pointed out in a resume or an interview is alignment with company philosophy and ambition towards a job role, which would come by vertical promotion within the employer's organization itself. Convince that all signs show you can be in long-term and would be an asset to the company.

Your resume needs to emphasize and show that not only are your philosophies aligned with your potential employer's company policy, but that you are fit both to carry the responsibilities of the post you are applying for, as well as those of the next post to which you are vertically promotable. It will help to create the impression that you are good for a long-term investment. This is the philosophy behind creating and tweaking resumes to make them effective.
