A Resume Addendum
By Gina Watson
An addendum to a resume is basically an add on document listing accomplishments, specific projects undertaken, representative cases, and basically any relevant data which cannot be accommodated within the resume portfolio. Why is it necessary? For those with voluminous information to showcase within the limit of two pages (the maximum a standard resume is allowed), it is wise to have a resume with a two or three page addendum.

Importance:
  • An addendum is a kind of support system which allows your resume to be concise and to the point. Squeezing information into your resume makes it unattractive and difficult to read.
  • Another very important aspect of an addendum is that you do not need to leave out significant amounts of pertinent information. Although not on the resume, vital facts can be displayed on an addendum.
  • It allows highlighting of those skills and achievements which you need to showcase. Be it the resume or the addendum, once the content has been divided and spread out, nothing is left undiscovered.
  • One of the best things about addendums is that it allows for ample space on the resume. Since a huge amount of data is shifted to the addendum, the resume has more white space, and it has a more clean, neat and calm look.
Steps to follow while making an addendum:
  • Create an addendum which is not more than two to three pages (single page addendum is more preferred).
  • Break down the addendum into various sections in order to enhance readability. (Remember that all these should by all means be directly related to your job search.) For instance:
    • Technical projects
    • Representative cases
    • Volunteer work
    • Publications
    • Leadership/Management skills
    • Accomplishments
    • Awards
  • Make sure what you include is interesting. While your fascination with collecting rare bird feathers is important to you, hiring managers may not look at it the way you do and probably will not be able to draw any significance to your employability as a litigation attorney for instance.
  • Arrange the content in bullet form. It would give a neat touch to the document.
  • Match the format and design of the addendum to the resume and make it as attractive. It should look an extended part of the resume.
It is to your discretion whether you include an addendum with your resume or not. Once prepared, you could either send it off along with the resume, or save it for the interview stage where you could present the document to the interviewer for a better insight into your background. Remember that for most, a single-paged resume is sufficient to summarize all credentials. But if you have a lot to showcase in terms of your unique abilities and expertise, then you must create an addendum which will go that extra mile to help distinguish you from the rest of the candidates.
