Resume Guide for Recent Graduates - Part 3
By Gina Watson
In the past few weeks, we discussed a range of issues related to resume writing tips for recent graduates. This week we will go on to discuss the final and the some of the most important factors that go a long way in crafting a winning resume.

Common mistakes to be avoided:
  • One of the first things that you need to remember is that your document should be sans grammatical errors and typos. It is simply unacceptable and hence you should proof read your document over and over again. You could also get it reviewed by someone else so that the mistakes you have overlooked, if any, will be spotted by others.

  • Secondly, it is best not to have highly fancy fonts, abnormal font sizes, and bright colored paper. Many first timers miss the point and end up with overly stylish resumes which could be deemed unprofessional and immature.
Attach a cover with your resume:

A cover letter can be one of the most significant factors in determining the success (or failure) of your job-hunting campaign. To have a fabulous resume but to have no cover letter to go with it, is like winning only half the battle. You simply must have a finely drafted cover letter which will transmit your resume to a potential employer. You need to apply as much effort as you did for your resume and make sure you grab the attention of the reader, escalate his or her level of curiosity, as well as arouse an immediate interest in your candidacy. Limit the length of the cover letter to one page, match it in design with the resume, and provide information which supports the content on the resume.

While drafting your resume, pay attention to small details, be honest, focus on skills and accomplishments and give your resume a polished and professional appearance. Remember that no accomplishment is small - so exhibit all your achievements with pride. You need to keep your confidence level up and keep trying. Creating a good resume, may be something you will be doing for the first time, but with a little effort and care, you can perform wonders.
