Resume Guide for Recent Graduates - Part 2
By Gina Watson
Last week we discussed high school information, solutions to having little or no work experience, and how you should place the education section on your resume. Let us move on to issues regarding the length of your resume, the extent of personal information that you need to include, and how you should include references.

Single page or a two-page resume:

It must always be remembered that hiring managers dedicate very little time to each and every resume that comes to them. The ones that stand out are the ones that attract their attention and you need to make sure that yours is among them. In order to grab the attention of the reader, it is of prime importance to have an outstanding presentation of the information you provide and to keep it short and crisp. Where the length of a resume is concerned, unless and until you have too much of information which would require a second page, be sure to fit everything into a single page. Have a relatively small font and/or set your page to a less margin space to ensure that the contents fit into a single page. Also, include the most relevant information, summarize the content in a clear and concise manner and then highlight those sections which need to be showcased. Bear in mind that everything you include in your resume should be grasped by the reader at a single glance. Information that spills into the second page or the third (which should never be the case unless absolutely necessary), will not capture the reader's attention within the few minutes that he or she skims through your resume.

Presenting references to potential employers:

It is strongly recommended that you do not include references on the resume unless the job advertisement states it. You need to prepare a list of references on a separate sheet paper and present it at the interview stage when requested. On this sheet, ideally, you may include the details of three professional and three personal references. Professional references would include details of individuals such as current or past employers, senior attorneys, professors, and judges you interned for. Personal references could be anyone who has known you for a good period of time and will vouch for your character. Take their permission before you use their names as your reference and include their job titles and contact details. While creating your resume, at the most you could mention the commonly used phrase, 'References upon request', at the end of the resume.

Extent of personal information that should be included:

Essentially, you should state only that much of personal information that is either relevant to your job search or which makes it possible for the potential employer to contact you. Apart from your name, postal address, telephone numbers, and Email address, nothing should be mentioned. Everything else that you include should directly relate to the position you are seeking.
