How Important is Volunteer Work
By Gina Watson
For some reason, many people shy away from including volunteer experience or community involvement of any kind on their resumes. While they firmly believe that the experience is important, they also feel that potential employers are solely concerned with their paid jobs.

Well, this is not true. Your resume has a lot more worth if it has a range of volunteer activities which exhibits desirable skills such as leadership, dedication, organization, flexibility and teamwork, in addition to an interest in being a valuable part of your community and focusing on helping those who need it. Remember, that if any such skill has been acquired from a volunteer work and if applicable to the current job search, then you need to mention it on your resume.

How does volunteer work help?

Employers are obviously interested in what many would call 'real work experience', but they are also on the look out for those candidates who have much more to offer. This mainly comes from the extent of volunteer work you have been engaged in over and above your rigorous work schedule, and this itself goes a long way to saying something about your caliber.
  • Volunteerism is a sign of commitment and indicates to prospective employers that you are there not because you get paid to be there, but simply because you wish to be there.
  • Various types of volunteer positions demonstrate skills directly transferable to the job you are targeting.
  • It also indicates that you have worked with numerous individuals from diverse industries and backgrounds and that you have the ability to take up responsibilities apart from your daily routine.
  • In case you have a gap in employment on your resume, such an experience aids in bridging it. Although unemployed for a period of time, employers understand that you were productively involved in work.
Presentation of volunteer work on your resume
The same way as you strategize the design for all the other content on your resume, information on volunteer activities needs to be given due importance.
  • Instead of giving one line descriptions of your work profile, showcase your leadership positions and accomplishments as much as possible.
  • Indicate the special skills such as mentoring, motivating, group involvement, coordination, and supervisory aspects.
  • It is also recommended that you do not indicate association with any particular political party, religion, or a controversial issue. At the most you could mention your involvement in managing or supervising 'a' political party or 'a' religious group. It is advisable to leave out names. You do not wish the reader make judgments on what they read.
Volunteer work, by and large, should not be taken lightly and must be displayed on the resume with due care, if applicable. It is a valuable addition to your experience and indicates that you are a highly qualified candidate with a unique skill set. Moreover, it aids in expanding your resume as well as your range of potential employers. Including such experience widens your scope of getting hired for those jobs which otherwise might not have been possible.
