Creating a Winning Legal Resume
A resume is the central document in a legal job search. It is one of the most effective tools used to market and sell the skills of legal professionals to the employers concerned. If your resume contains grammatical or formatting errors, it is less likely to be considered by employers. A well-written and a properly formatted resume goes a long way to get you to the interview.

Rules to be followed while creating a winning legal resume:
  1. Contact Information: The header should contain your full contact information, including your name, address, home phone number, cell phone number, and a professional e-mail address. If you have a profile on a popular business networking site like LinkedIn, you could also include the link in this section.
  2. 'Profile' or a 'Summary Of Qualifications' section: This section is very important as it puts in the forefront your experience, areas of expertise and key skills. Use short and powerful sentences. At the end of this section, remember to include your Bar status and any professional affiliation.
  3. Key Accomplishments: if you have contributed significant value in your previous positions, then this is the best place to showcase them. Pick out the best four or five achievements and list them here in bullets.
  4. Work experience: Mention your work experience in the reverse chronological order, starting with your most recent position. List the name of the company, the city and the state. Make sure to include accurate dates of tenure so that no information is misinterpreted. In order to include responsibilities held, you could either mention them in the bulleted form or as a paragraph, or use a combination of both in a para-bullet form. Whichever you use, it is essential to organize your data so that it is attractive and showcases the most important aspects of your work profile.
  5. Education: Mention the name of your college, law school, university, location, and the degrees received. Dates are optional here and may be left out for older candidates who do not wish to highlight the age factor.
  6. Training and Certification: If you have any certification or have taken courses related to the job search area, then you could mention this as well.
  7. Additional Information: This section could include anything which would add to the value of your resume. For instance, you could mention publications, legal internships, training, language or computer skills, etc.
  8. References: It is recommended to prepare on a separate sheet of paper a list of references which should be presented at the interview on request. At the most you should only include 'Reference upon Request' at the end of the resume.
  9. Powerful action verbs: The language you use is very important and will go a long way to determine the success of your job search. Begin sentences with powerful action verbs such as drafted, researched, analyzed, mediated, resolved, implemented, navigated, oversaw, authored, formulated, incorporated, etc.
Resumes play a very important role in your job search and creating a winning one becomes tremendously necessary in this age of competition. Follow the above rules and craft out the perfect legal resume that will help you land your dream job.
