How to avoid Common Errors in Resumes
Recruiters are not blind to mistakes made on a resume. Unfortunately, a single mistake on a resume can class the applicant poorly in the eyes of the employer and two or more can send the candidate's job application in the trash box.

So what can you do to avoid mistakes while making the resume? Primarily, we need to get a look at the definition of a resume.

What is a resume and how it helps an attorney?

A resume is an advertising tool to promote an attorney’s skills to interested employers. Rather than just a flat listing of work experience, the resume should proactively sell the applicant to companies with open positions. So, it is highly essential that the legal professional make his or her resume according to a suitable resume type, structure, and formatting.

Utilizing the proper resume

Simply listing the Bar status, education, skills, work experience, and a single sentence profile on a sheet of paper is not enough to qualify for a winning job search strategy. The job seeker must consider quite a few types of resumes depending on his or her employment history.
  • If you are an experienced attorney, the chronological resume should best suit you.
  • If you are a recent law graduate or an experienced person with numerous gaps in employment, then the functional resume would do you good. The functional resume is utilized to highlight your skills as a legal professional and downplay the time or the experience factor.
  • One of the most effective types of resume that can be used is the blend of both chronological and functional - the hybrid resume. This type can be utilized by anyone with a successful track record and a wealth of skills to showcase.
Whichever type of resume you utilize, you must remember to first see that it best suits your profile and is most effective in getting you to the interview door.

Avoiding grammar, spelling, and punctuation errors

The main error employers look for is spelling or grammar oversights on both the resume and cover letter. You should always run the spellchecker software to make sure of spelling accuracy. Proper grammar and punctuation is also very important; mistakes like run-on sentences, absence of apostrophes, and inappropriate use of capitalization can make the candidate appear unqualified and unpolished.

Keeping away from inflating the resume to obtain a job

The current job market in the legal arena is very tough, and the tendency to inflate or even slightly twist information on the resume is tempting enough to get an opportunity to be over and above the other competitors. However, after manipulating the resume for your own benefit, and sending it to the prospective employer, if the employer suspects the authenticity about job skills and experiences, it is guaranteed, that the job application will be immediately rejected. You should always highlight relevant experience but should never lie to get the job. It is not only unethical but could damage your reputation as an attorney, if discovered.
