Resume Writing that Gets You the Job
Whether it is to get a new job or a promotion in the company in which you are working, you need to put in a good amount of time and effort. On the road to success, you need to take five fundamental steps to make your job search more effective.

1. Analyzing your skills

The most crucial step in the job search process is to assess what skills you have to offer to your prospective employers. At an interview you will have to tell your story. Since the interviewer will not remember precise details, your story will be remembered if it is presented with practical examples. This means that you need to explain what do you do; the skills you possess; your achievements; and the benefit your previous company got from employing you.

2. Writing a winning Resume

A summary of your skills becomes the cornerstone of your resume. Your resume must be tailored to the needs of your future employers and so you need to customize it accordingly. Some important things to be kept in mind are as follows:
  • Aim for a one-page resume
  • Decide on the key selling points and arrange them in an effective manner to highlight your uniqueness.
  • Showcase your achievements and the benefit others received from them.
  • Use simple but impactful words.
Managing your job search

Three elements that are used to effectively managing your job search process are:
  • Controlling channels: Contacts; Media; Agencies; Direct approach

  • Analyzing jobs: analyze the requirements of the job applied for so that you understand that the new role and your skill set match perfectly.

  • Constructing compelling cover letters: It should talk about why you are applying for the job; how your skills match the requirements of the new position; and what outcome you wish to achieve.
Coaching for interview success

Your interviewer wants to know two things - can you do the job and will you fit in. Your resume prompts the questions in relation to 'can you do the job?'. These questions revolve around the technical details of your current or most recent position (the who, what, when, where, how and why of your current job).

The issue of whether you will fit in is crucial to the success of your interview. You may be technically superb, but if your interviewer believes that you will 'upset the applecart', he/she will not hire you. Use real life examples to illustrate your points and provide a picture of the competent and capable person that you are.

Negotiating your job offer

Following a successful interview, build on your success by negotiating an attractive job offer. This involves maximizing your remuneration package and ensuring that your contract of employment exceeds the legal minimum. Understand what your own requirements but make sure that they are in line with the reality of today's labor market.
