Crafting a Resume for a Highly Competitive Job Market
A well-written resume is always important but it takes on greater significance during highly competitive times when job openings reduce significantly and the number of people applying for jobs increases exponentially.

What can you do during your job search to ensure your resume receives attention even in a period of crisis?

A resume has served its purpose when you receive an interview call. How can you ensure this when the average recruiter hardly gets to glance at a resume, in an average scenario? The typical recruiter regularly faces a pile of resumes, some of which are a long way off from the required candidate profile. Not only is this tiresome for the recruiter, it can also put him or her off a resume that is actually a good fit for the job, but failed to catch attention.

In a highly competitive economy, as well as throughout your career, you have to make sure your resume is attention-worthy and able to stand the test of sustained scrutiny.

Ensure You Match Requirements

If your resume is not matching job requirements, it will not be able to stand closer inspection. Quite apart from the fact that this does nothing for your job search, it will ruin your reputation as a professional and may put off a particular recruiter from your candidacy forever. Make sure you do not commit such mistakes that might spoil your reputation or lead to irreversible loss in your career and career plans. This can prove to be very costly, particularly in a competitive market. In the same way, do not blindly apply to job openings. For example, if you have never ever been behind the steering wheel of a car, it does not make much sense to send your resume for the post of a driver.

Eliminate Mistakes

As a job seeker, you have to prove you are the best in your profession and that you are serious about your career. Do all that is in your power to ensure your resume does not contain errors. If needed, proof-read it multiple times to weed out typographical mistakes and to ensure correct tense usage and grammar. Nothing can be more irritating to a busy recruiter than spotting a typo that is highly obvious. The presence of highly obvious typos can only indicate one thing: you are not a very careful person and not too bothered about mistakes either. Both of these are a strict ‘no’ for the professional who is serious about his or her job search.

List Accomplishments Prominently

If crafted well, your resume reveals a lot about your career plan and the kind of job search you are conducting. Make sure your resume lists your accomplishments clearly. Start with your most recent accomplishments and pick the ones that showcase your professional expertise and any other qualifications such as the ability to work well within a team or to bring in new clients. In case your resume flows into two pages, it is a good idea to list accomplishments on the first page to ensure they are not missed by a busy recruiter. If needed, you can summarize these and place the summary on the top of the resume.
