Making The Resume Litmus Test Work For You
Do you want to make certain that hiring managers really do read your resume? There's a quick test you can apply to make sure it's a piece of paper that someone wants to read. Let's take a look to see what you can do to make your resume one that gets looked at, rather than tossed away. A surprising number of people don't know what they're doing when it comes to job applications, and you don't want to be one of them.

Every resume is essentially a series of talking points. Most people don't think about what they sound like, however. Recruiters will be hearing those words in their heads, and many resumes quickly turn into a boring slog that's hard to read. If yours falls into that category, it's probably going into the pile of rejections pretty fast. Fortunately, there are things you can do to fix this problem, and they're not even all that hard.

So, what do you do to make sure you have a resume that's both concise and professional, but still easy to read? The key is to cut out jargon. Many people make the mistake of writing in business jargon, which results in a convoluted resume that's hard to read and understand. You might think that you're hiding something under all those words, or you might think they make you look more professional. However, what they're really doing is buying your resume a short trip to the recycling bin.

Take a moment to read your resume out loud, and think about how it sounds. You want it to sound as much like an ordinary conversation as you can. If you hesitate, backtrack to find words, or stumble reading it aloud, you might have to go back and think about things again. You may need to totally rework your resume on your own or you might even need to hire an expert who can help you build the perfect resume. Don't feel bad if your resume doesn't pass the test - most people's don't.

Reading out loud has a few other benefits, too. You'll probably find a few errors you weren't aware of before. Those typos, missing works, and misspellings can cause a lot of problems and get your resume tossed out quickly. Fix them as you improve the quality of your wording, and don't get stressed out! You'll sound stilted and unnatural, and your writing will be hard to read. You'll be surprised by how much just relaxing can do for the clarity of your resume.

Think about what you say before you write each portion of the resume, and clarify before you write, not after. Keep words to a minimum, and make sure you use simple ones when you can. Never use a big word when a small one will do! Any recruiter will tell you - after going through hundreds of resumes, they're interested in seeing one that's easy to read. Each resume gets only a few seconds of time before being discarded or put into the pile of possible hires. You know which pile you want your resume to be in! Write with care and make sure your resume is readable if you want to get top results - it's worth it in the long run.
