Using the Power of the Web to Spice up Your Job Application
Experts generally advice not to deviate from the traditional form of resumes, especially in case of attorneys, and that is good advice. However, the need to differentiate is also overwhelming in a tight job market, and we need to find ways to spice up presentations of our selves without seeming crass, or crossing the bounds of propriety.

A well-designed web portfolio with good writing samples, insightful blogs, and video testimonials is an asset that every attorney should have. In fact, the minimum one can do is to maintain a blog to display one's attitude and understanding of the law, as well as familiarity with current topics and specialty subjects.

If you are a professional, then maintaining a regular blog on your subject is essential to demonstrate subject knowledge. How many casual visitors view that blog is irrelevant, but that you can add a link to your blog in presentations, resumes, and cover letters for demonstrating your knowledge and thought processes, is relevant to your career.

Putting in a link to your web portfolio or blog in your resume does not break the traditional form in any manner or give reason to raise eyebrows. However, a link to your web portfolio or blog placed in the first paragraph of your cover letter, or objective statement of the resume, can aid your presentation immensely if the recruiter cares to follow the link and check out your web presence out of curiosity. A web presence is also a great way to passively attract potential clients or recruiters, and is something that you cannot afford to neglect.

Do's and Don'ts of a Web Portfolio

In any web portfolio or website promoting the brand of a person there are certain common sense approaches that pay off:

Don'ts:
  • Do not use sloppy design or layout, or a do-it-myself approach unless you know what you are doing.
  • Do not write a casual blog or web content. If some recruiter chances upon your website, he or she is going to inspect and scrutinize for errors as hard as they would when scrutinizing your actual job resume.
  • Do not use SEO optimized content unless you are hiring a real artist who can write SEO copy without hurting the flow of words. The quality of content in your website matters more than the SEO optimization of your web content. You are not creating a commercial website designed to drive casual traffic. Your web portfolio is a demonstration of your writing skills and thoughts, and that is what you should focus upon. Anything that reduces the effectiveness of the content with respect to its given purpose should be seen as quality reduction.
Do's:
  • Do use established blogging software like Wordpress or Blogger
  • Do use video testimonials wherever possible
  • Do demonstrate your grasp of subjects and your expertise through opinionated blogs
  • Do provide contact details and means of access
  • Do write on topics of current relevance
  • Do update and add articles or blogs as frequently as possible
A website portfolio helps you to express yourself in much greater detail, than you possibly can through a cover letter or resume. Your chances of recruitment and demonstration of professionalism increases exponentially, if any recruiter happens to visit your site and find a well-organized website with acceptable expressions of thought.
