Preparing an Administrative Law Judge Resume
Usually, the ALJ announcement is opened and closed within a short span of one or two days. Sometimes, the time is even less than 48 hours. So, attorneys who aspire to work as an Administrative Law Judge for the Federal government, need to have a search agent set on sniper mode for receiving alerts, as soon as announcements commence.

And aspirants to the post of Administrative Law Judge need to have finished resumes ready to shoot off, as soon as the opportunity to submit applications presents itself. In addition, any attorney trying for the post of an ALJ must be conversant with the requirements of the exam, and be ready to respond on spur of the moment.

Quick response time is essential for submitting an application for the post of an Administrative Law Judge, since receiving applications is stopped on the happening of any one of the following events:
  • Reaching the maximum number reserved for admitting applications
  • Reaching the designated time of closing submissions
In 2009, the maximum number reserved was for 600 applications. This number was reached within 30 hours of making the announcement for receiving applications. So, submission of applications was closed much before the designated time, as the maximum number of applications had been reached. Late responders targeting the announced period for submissions were mostly left in the lurch, when they realized that a delay of a few hours had cost them the opportunity for the year.

The Application for the Post of an Administrative Law Judge

The entire application for an Administrative Law Judge has several parts including:
  • A questionnaire for self-assessment, in which you need to answer multiple-choice questions
  • The resume, which in case of relevant federal positions usually stretches close to twice the length of such resumes normally submitted to private firms
  • An accomplishment record
  • Two narratives that set out your administrative and litigation experience sufficient to qualify you for the post
The Resume for the Post of an Administrative Law Judge

The first thing you have to be aware of is that your resume is not going to be primarily screened by lawyers, (as would happen in most private firms), but HR people at the Office of Personnel Management. So, choice of words is extremely important, and you need to use the keywords from the advertisement to emphasize that you are what the HR people are looking for. You need to study formats and guides provided by the OPM and try to follow the archaic flow of language used by that office. A modern attorney resume meant for private firms, stands the risk of being rejected by HR employees at the OPM if they cannot find the keywords and format they are used to. When preparing a resume for any formal federal job, never except people to apply their minds, but assume that your resume is primarily going to be screened by an electronic search. Even if humans are going to do it, the approach and results will be the same as that in case of unthinking search engines following set algorithms.

Also remember that resumes for the post of an ALJ are expected to be significantly more detailed than expected for local government positions. Details of current, and at least the last two positions held by you should be described in detail, including responsibilities and duties and emphasizing the points that are of relevance with respect to the advertised requirements for the job.

The accomplishment record, which is also part of the application, requires you to list your experiences in six areas relevant to the competencies sought by the office of the OPM in its advertisement. Not all of these are required to be in the legal field, but must be relevant to the requirements of the job.

For further research and detail, I suggest visiting the website of the Office of Personnel Management would be of help to aspiring applicants.
